on may 12 our fair province heads to the polls to elect a provincial government. things are a little different in b.c. than in other provinces.
to recap from the last federal election:
idiots - the liberal party (center)
assholes - the conservative party (right)
douche bags - the new democrats (left)
loonies - the green party
in our fair province the idiots and assholes merged to prevent the douche bags from forming government. the douche bags still win once in a while. it's not because anyone really likes them it's just that their hatred for the idiot/asshole party intensifies every 10 years or so.
the asshole/idiot party call themselves idiots. this is a bit of a misnomer because our idiot party is really a right wing asshole party but it's easier to market them as idiots.
i don't like the idiots, assholes or douche bags so i usually vote for the loonies unless the libertarians or marijuana party run a candidate in my riding.
this time we're also voting on a new system to elect the crooks who will fleece us. the parties that lose are sick of losing so they're proposing a new system. it's call "STV", it stands for single transferable vote. it's pretty complicated and most people don't understand it. i've read lots of stuff on it and it's still not crystal clear to me. basically you get rank your preferences of the candidates. ie, you not only indicate whom your first choice would be you also indicate your second and third choices ad infinitum. it's still not that easy. your vote can get carved up to more than one candidate.
STV explained
i defy anyone to read the above link and be able to fully understand he new system in 10 minutes or less. maybe josh will figure it out because he's really smart.

My brain aches!
I don't like pie.
What an extremely odd and confusing system!
I wish you and your fractured votes the best of luck... may your pieces go where you'd like them to go!
Yikes.
How are liberals center? I find your system even more confusing than ours.
Seems to me to be a system to keep people who aren't everyone's #1 choice from feeling bad, by only counting as many #1 votes that a person needs to win and giving the rest to the #2 person. In fact that sounds boderline communistic (from each according to his voting preference, to each according to how many he/she needs to win).
I don't think I'd approve of a system where I wouldn't know who would receive my vote (in whole or in part) until the votes were counted...
cotw, mr. pilgrim seemingly said the liberals are not actually centrists but rightwingers. makes sense to me
are you crazy? hell i dont even understand our politics half the time..they dont vote party line and they kiss everyones ass that will vote for anyone that will put money into their state..fuckers.
I don't even remember where Canada is at, let alone how did ya'll get computers? Canada has come along way. Canada is a northern state right? (just kidding)
billy, you were right... Josh is smart. He made sense. I'd be worried where my vote would end up too. Good call Josh! (I needed that sanity line in my sea of confusion.)
ananda - i can't figure out if our leaders are over estimating or underestimating our intelligence. yup, josh is smart.
citizens - our liberals aren't really liberals. the provincial liberals and federal liberals are a different kettle of fish.
josh - exactly! we wouldn't really know who we were voting for unless we only checked on box.
yellowdog - yes we are crazy. i think this thing might pass.
uno - the liberals are accomplished shape shifters.
sage - we aren't a northern state, we're a subsidiary of corporate america, as are all your states.
OK, I'm way too lazy to go back and read how/why so tell me, Mr. Myshkin - how the feck did you end up in B.C.? You take the rest of the Myshkins with you or did you just hustle out there to meet up with Number 1?
rocky - did you see my turtle billy when you migrated north?
i ended up in bc via iceland, north dakota and saskatchewan. sadly the myshkins never settled in ireland.
Hey... this was a really fun post, billy.
I tried explaining it to our government teacher. She gave me a "clearly you did not understand something simple" look and vowed to look it up on the internet. I can't wait to hear her response.
I didn't even try to figure it out, I'm not feeling too smart this morning.
There was a woman running for office down here that really wanted votes she started a "STD" system. Man, I'm glad I didn't vote for her!
ananda - this system was concocted by a "citizen's committee" of about 160 people. that's why it's such a piece of shit.
kinda like the council of nicea. i believe they came up with a convoluted system of rules and beliefs.
tex - our politicians have been giving std's to the good citizens for years. but free health care and ample penicillin usually takes care of it.
lol!
Wouldn't it be easier just to have Simon Cowell pick the top three?
you got an award..check out my blog.jac
sling - i think simon would tell them all to piss off and we'd be leaderless.
some say we're already leaderless.
You got a double award.
