after almost 2 months i finally got an email from sonny. he popped into mayo for supplies and was able to send me a quick note. this is his 4th summer in the northern mining racket, in the previous 3 years he had internet access in the camp. no such luck this year.
in previous years he was in camps that were drilling for base metals. with the financial meltdown earlier this year the price of base metals plummeted so drilling dried up for those boring base metals. this year he's in a gold camp and it appears a few of the holes have had excellent results. i'm guessing that he's working out of a base camp and has to helicopter in to the drilling sites. i hate helicopters.
on a selfish note, i wish he'd hurry up and come home. i've decided it's time to get a new tv and i need him to hook it up for me. i can plug the tv in but that feckin sound system totally baffles me. when the aliens are blasting space ships out of the sky i need to rattle a few windows.

you definitely have to hook up the sound system right - if your bones aren't rattling during the action scenes then it just isn't loud enough

sling - if it was placer mining he might scoop a few nuggets but it's hard rock mining so he'd have to bring down several tons of dirt for one feckin oz.

Mining has a long history in these parts, too, but it's gold nd zinc. In fact, my yard is adjacent to land owned by the mines and I understand the tunnels run up under our houses.
about 4 years ago, during a heavy rain storm, a man in our area was sitting in his basement family room, and whooosh! disappeared into a sink hole never to been seen again. it turns out that his home was built over abandoned mine tunnels.
That song must have been played a 1000 times when my family made the trip up the Alcan Highway when me moved to Alaska. My brother, sister, and I were little so we made my poor parents play that song over and over. I hope Sonny gets home soon to hook you up. Maybe he will hit the mother lode and be able to pack up early.
