labor day

is the labor movement dead???

i don't know if it's dead but it's certainly on the decline. i was going to do some research and come up with some nice tables and graphs showing the decline of unions but it was just too much work. i'll trust my gut and say unions are losing their clout and it doesn't look like things are going to turn around any time soon.

basically i'm pro union but my good buddy deepak chopra says it's bad for your health to defend a position. odds are most people have strong views on unions and it's next to impossible to change their minds. perhaps if conditions change some people may change their minds.

so here's the labor day poll:

for those who voted for the unions...

I was shocked, shocked I SAY, to realise that there is no union at the nursing home. If EVER a workplace needed more VIVA power to the workers, it’s that bloody hellhole.

Yes the distaste and disappointment in my second year raise is still high.

Fuckers!!

Hmm. I made ONLY the second vote. Hmm. No other comments.
Hmm. You voted for the beer didn't you.

At one time he seemed to make sense, now that he has made a lot of money he just sounds like a babbling idiot.

Jesus was pro union, they may lose some ground for a while but they will come back strong again for as long as their is greed on this planet.

If greed ever goes away there won't be any need for them of course.

Sadly, even some unions even get greedy.

apositivepessimist...... A union in a nursing home? Fuck, get real, their just old fucks that the administrators of those places can make money off of by using cheap labor. They don't really give a crap about any of them, they're just a payday.

apos - the residents would probably benefit from a union too but profits might slip a little.

uno - nothing like a union made beer.

bbc - you have to admit that deepak has a certain roguish charm about him.

why didn't you vote for the beer??

I always vote for beer, but it pisses me off that they charge a sales tax on it here when I consider it a food item.

I think, in general, unions have helped a lot of people. But this is a very ant-union area, I guess beause of all the mines.

My dad was a union guy his whole life, and came away with a pretty good retirement deal.
I've been in a couple, but they never really did all that much for me.

yellowdog - happy one week to the cowboys opener.

secret - i think miners need a union more than anyone.

sling - i think defined benefit pensions from unions are way better than that 401k deal.

All I know is I've worked for contractors in union tire factories and non-union. Non-union conditions sucked, union places were nice.
I remember something written on the non-union bathroom wall.

"Those who write on shit-house walls
roll their shit into little balls
and those who read
these words of wit
eat those little balls of shit."

tex - as long as the dues are reasonable union shops are the best in my books.

Union baby here. My classified union is a limp noodle compared to the one that the teachers have. BUT I also work under better conditions with more holidays and perks than anyone else I know who isn't a teacher. I am grateful.

You are absolutely correct, billy. Unions have been in a stead decline of power.

I think the clear thinking that used to go with liberals is in decline too... and I'm a liberal. We seem to be losing cohesion.

Just my personal opinion.
