mountain bikes 101

i spent the past few weeks looking for a bike. first i was going to get a road bike or a hybrid. after test riding a few i knew that i had to have a mountain bike. road bikes are just no good for going over curbs or taking short cuts through parks. i need a bike that can take a licking and keep on ticking.

in my small amount of research i discovered that there is a lot of bullshit in the marketing of these bikes. the expensive bikes with the prestigious brand names have the same components as the cheaper brands. an expensive rocky mountain or kona bike does not have rocky mountain or kona gears, shifters, rims etc. they make the frame but put on other manufacturers components. almost all the shifters are shimano.

so i stumbled upon a bike on sale pretty cheap with a brand name lacking cache and took the plunge. as soon as i noticed the brand name, i had a nickname all ready.

meet the iron maiden.

i won't say what it cost because a certain old prick will tell me he got a lawnmower for free and his $20 bike is just as good.

i love almost everyone of you sons of bitches.

"i love almost everyone of you sons of bitches." Uh oh! Hope I haven't been crossed off your list!

I have a hybrid bike. I really don't do any true mountain bike, but regular road bikes don't seem sturdy enough to me.

citizen - of course i still love you. i also find that the wide tires are safer when the asphalt meets the concrete curbs.

yellowdog - i'm guessing that you don't love the old prick either.

do you think his mother loved him?

Well, all I know is Kona coffee is pretty good.

Doesn't look too much like a medieval torture device to me, but maybe I'm just not being creative enough.

josh - the brand is iron horse so the moniker iron maiden leaped to mind.

bbc - i might not love you but i admire your ability to take a joke.

sling - and it was all paid for with empty beer tins.

yellowdog - he hasn't threatened to pepper spray ruby so he's ok in my books.

I don't care what yellow dog thinks of me, she is packing more luggage than an ocean freighter.

I don't care what anyone on the web thinks of me, I have lots of friends and live a gifted life.
