man's best friend

has anyone seen this image?

it came from a story regarding FLOODING IN BRAZIL. when i first saw this picture it reminded my of just how faithful a dog can be. the more i thought of the dog standing vigil over the grave the more emotional i became.

last sunday was ruby's designated birthday. ruby was a street urchin whom i adopted from a shelter. i didn't rescue ruby, she rescued me. after having a cup of coffee i called her to go for a walk but she wouldn't get out of her bed. this never happens, dogs live for walks. i checked her out and she seemed very lethargic. try as i might, i couldn't persuade her to go for a walk. ruby is nine years old and the life expectancy for her breed is 8 - 12 so i was more than a little alarmed. what to do? i felt her nose. it was warm and semi wet. for the rest of day i treated her like a queen. breakfast in bed and the offer of a walk every hour. she turned me down every time.

she has now returned to her normal self and i'm left wondering if she was really ill or just putting on an act. pitbulls are famous for being vicious and dangerous but there's another side to them. they are very sensitive and intuitive. don't get me wrong, pitbulls are no angels and i wouldn't trust ruby around small children.

at 55 years of age i have more days behind me than in front of me. i've always had the companionship of a dog and think how much time have left on this planet in terms of how many dogs i'll share my life with. i have more dogs behind me than ahead of me. statistically i should have 2 more dogs in my life, maybe 3 if someone up there really likes me.

ruby, long may you run.

Yes, I did see that picture last week. Maybe Ruby was just having a down day. Rick's Molly had three down days recently after eating a box of chocolates, damn wonder it didn't kill her, she only stands about a foot tall anyway.

Anyway, what kind of dog will you get next?

Hadn't seen that picture--it is stark.
Ruby's a beauty. She looks like she plans on staying by your side for quite some time.

billy - before ruby i had black lab/german shepherd crosses. those were fabulous beasts but in ruby's defense she's an excellent watch dog and very clean.

jayne - it's a picture that' going to stick in my head for a long time. funny how the thought of countless dead brazilians didn't move me but one dog standing vigil deeply affected me. so it goes.

If I move to the country I'll get a healer or blue tick hound, they are great dogs. But as long as I live in Monkeyville I refuse to have a dog.

Don't get too hung up on a picture and some emotion, it could be fixed, most dogs take things with a grain of salt and just take up with a new owner that will treat them decent and feed them.

BLUETICK HOUND

And they are great with kids, but if someone is giving you a bad time they'll tear them out a new asshole, they don't like others fucking with their owners.

I've just thought of a new meaning for the phrase "life's a bitch".

billy - i'm just not a bluetick sort of a guy.

gb - as opposed to life's a greyback?

But does your dog bite?

billy pilgrim said...

robert - in a word, yes. she has been a very high maintenance dog. there was a time when we tried to return her to the shelter but they wouldn't take her. it took a few years but she's turned into an asset from a liability.

What a great web log. I spend hours on the net reading blogs, about tons of various subjects. I have to first of all give praise to whoever created your theme and second of all to you for writing what i can only describe as an fabulous article. I honestly believe there is a skill to writing articles that only very few posses and honestly you got it. The combining of demonstrative and upper-class content is by all odds super rare with the astronomic amount of blogs on the cyberspace.

I'm glad she's alright and I know what you mean about the other side of pits. I think dogs are great, they make your life better.

Long may she run!

I hope Ruby stays her happy self! She is such a beauty.
Bear had a dog, as auzie shep mix that kept eating things that were bad for him. Once he stole a pack of smokes and ate all of them. The vet said it was too late to pump his stomach by the time we figured it out and it was a waiting game. He lay for 3 days looking like he was a gonner, then on the fourth day popped up good as new.
I think dogs know how to love and do so with amazing devotion. That photo is very touching.

tex - i can't imagine not having a dog. friendship and security!

ananda - ruby ate a box of brownie mix and it went right through her. funny thing, her discharge didn't smell that bad, it went through so quick her arse smelled like brownies. it was still a big mess to clean.

I know what you mean about the dog at the grave causing more of an emotional stir that the thousands of dead humans without dogs to mourn them...

Maybe Ruby ate some cardboard - happened to a friend of mine's dog....

Great picture. I escaped Face Book for a second. My boys dog Odin is a Rottweiler mix and is a little down today. Hard telling what he's gotten into. I just about got rid of him at first because he loved chewing headphone and network cables. He'll eat anything he can reach but never bites except in play. They say that having a Dog will help you live longer but puppies will be the death of me.

That is a great picture and just reinforces why they are man's best friend. I hope Ruby is feeling better. It just pains me to hear that she might be slowing down because I know how awesome she is and how loved she is by you and others. Take care Billy and Ruby.
