on the weekend some guy named tom mulcair was elected leader of the new democratic party. in the past mulcair was a liberal cabinet minister in quebec.
the current interim leader of the federal liberals is bob rae. in the past bob was the new democratic premier of ontario.
jean charest is the liberal premier of quebec. in the past jean was the leader of the federal conservative party.
stephen harper is the conservative prime minister of canada. he was originally elected as a member of the reform party.
these are just the guys that are in the news at the moment but you get the picture. these creeps are nothing but opportunists that will jump ship at the drop of a hat if they sense more power or if they feel stagnated in their current party. the bizarre thing about it nobody seems to be outraged at these political chameleons. but if they make some politically incorrect statement about people of color or homosexuals all hell will break lose.
we are a nation of politically correct sheep waiting to be arse fucked by any slick politician with money who can stick to his/her script.

canadian politics
we have 3 main political parties in canada; the conservatives, the liberals and the new democrats. the liberals ruled the land for most of the 20th century but the conservatives have held power for most of the 21st century. the liberals have fallen to number three status behind the conservatives and new democrats. the liberals turfed their leader after they got decimated in the last election and the new democrat leader croaked shortly after his party had the best showing in their history. so it goes.
the liberals and new democrats are both having leadership races at the moment and the new democrats are having their LEADERSHIP CONVENTION THIS WEEKEND.
there are 7 candidates vying for the leadership and i'm sure that less than 1% of canadians can name 4 of them. i follow politics and couldn't name 4 of them if my life depended on it. the interim leader of the liberals is the former new democrat premier of ontario, our biggest province. we westerners think ontarions suck farts out of dead horses.
on a more interesting note, i actually bought a real book this week and it's a beauty. it'll look good beside the deadwood boys on my book shelf.
just for the hell of it i bought 7 one ounce silver coins from different countries to compare the quality and i must say the canadian maple leaf looks the best but the winner of the competition is the 5 ounce silver turtle coin. i might just buy a shit load of these things i like it so much.

the iron maiden
i bought the iron maiden 5 years ago and was proud as punch when i brought her home. my previous 2 bikes were purchased second hand so this was a big step up for me. all was well for the first few years then it started to slip out of 8th gear, the smallest sprocket on the cassette. i spent a lot of time riding up and down the lane trying to adjust the derailer and just couldn't get it right. then one day i decided to clean the gears and derailer and presto, it worked good as new and all was well with my world. every few months things would act up and i'd have to clean everything. over time the cleaning became more and more frequent until i was cleaning it every week. i then spent a few afternoons trying to adjust the gears but i just couldn't get it right. it was either poor eyesight or the onset of senility that robbed me of the ability to tune up a bike. i was a beaten man.
i decided to ride to the bike shop and pay for a professional tune up. (i'd rather pay for sex than to have a bike tuned up) the bike shop guy took one look at it and told me the smallest gear was totally worn out. i took a close look and son of a bitch, he was right! i had spent countless hours trying to tune up a bike that was basically unfixable. he quoted me a price of $150 for new gears and a new chain then explained to me that i could use the larger front sprocket along with a slightly larger rear sprocket to get the same gear ratio. since he was nice enough to give me the free advice i let him talk to me like i was a child. i spend every waking hour comparing financial ratios so i didn't need a rudimentary lesson in math but i just kept nodding and thanking him.
now i have to decide whether to fix the old girl or buy an new bike. i change my mind several times each day.
at first i was disappointed that the gear was worn out then it hit me. wearing out the drive train on a bike is a badge of honor. i'm a real feckin bike rider! i wore out a new bike!!
so i got that going for me too, which is nice.

it came!
my first ebay purchase arrived today!
that's the good news, the bad news is i suspect it's counterfeit.
when i bought this on ebay it said brand new, sealed etc... and the location was the united states so i figured what the hell and bought it. today the package arrived and it was from china. when i opened it up the packaging kind of fell apart:
what the hell, it costs about $150 plus tax around here and it came to $37.01 on ebay so it might be one of the cheapest lessons i've ever learned. i'll have to give it a test this evening after a little fishing.
a few weeks ago i bought a blue ray player, not to play blue ray discs but to use the usb port for playing music. it was manufactured by samsung and as luck would have it my tv is a samsung. the problem was whenever i turned on the blue ray player it hijacked the tv. it also had about 4 options i had to choose from before the action started. after a little fishing options can be a challenge so the unit was returned this morning and i picked up another one. this evening i'll give it a try if i get ambitious and plug in the wires this afternoon.

german silver
anyone want a good deal on some german silver?
a strange beam of light shone through my bedroom window a few weeks ago and the next morning i had an uncontrollable urge to seek russian coins on ebay. i had never used ebay before so it was all new to me. i found one really cool russian coin but some nogoodniks outbid me with about 5 seconds left. so it goes. a few days later i purchased what i thought was a 3 coin package of russian coins but when it came time to settle i learned it was only one coin so i had to tell some prick in estonia to go fuck himself. he reluctantly voided the deal.
then one morning i saw what i thought was a good deal on some silver ingots. they were advertised as german silver .999 fine so i put in a bid and was successful. then i read the fine print and learned that there is no silver in german silver so once again i told the seller to blow me. it was a big scam so i was pretty confident that he would acquiesce. and once again i was released. big whoop. the last few days i've been looking at the bids on german silver and some of that shit is selling like hotcakes. obviously the good folks at ebay are aware of this little scam and are content to collect their commission.
this german silver is an alloy of copper, zinc and nickel which makes me wonder how they can advertise it as .999 fine. i did manage to successfully bid on a cool item and actually pay for it and now i eagerly await delivery. it's something i've wanted for a long time and without a doubt i'll put it to good use. if anyone can guess what it is they will receive one troy ounce of german silver.
i was so distraught at learning there might be some skullduggery on ebay that i had to make an emergency trip to the fish store. i look forward to carnivale tonight!

return from exile
after 2 years in exile sonny returns to the big smoke tomorrow. sonny was unable to land a job in vancouver when he finished his master's so he took a job out of town and after 2 long years he's managed to get transferred the vancouver office. as of tomorrow vancouver will have one more geotechnical engineer. happy days are here again!
