how do you like these new larger fonts! after several requests from international readers who did not enjoy the luxury of having english as a first language in their youth, i have increased the font size in order ensure that my pearls of wisdom don't wash over the sluice box. a gold mine with a recovery rate of under 90% would not be tolerated so in the same vein, an international blog with a comprehension rate of under 54% must be corrected. additionally, proof reading might be in order now that the source of these pearls of wisdom is able to review the material and engage in somber second thought. lucky you.
it was overdue but last night the annual DEADWOOD marathon began its 8th (or maybe 9th, i've lost track) voyage into and around my mind. a mind is a terrible thing to waste and i can think of no greater waste than having 4 sets of DEADWOOD discs sitting idle. idle no more, westerns matter, occupy the black hills...... you get the point.
i lacked the usual enthusiasm this year after the loss of my faithful pitbull, my saintly father and my mentally defective best friend but as they say, the show must go on. once the lights were turned down and the sound system was calibrated it was time to push the play button. it took less than 60 seconds for the magic to return. many people truly think i'm nuts to watch the same series over and over again but i ask them, when you purchase a cd by your favorite artist, do only listen to it once or twice? fuck no, they listen to many, many times.
i can't over emphasize the importance of a good sound system to truly experience the genius of david milch. his dialogue is enthralling and the music is downright hypnotic. one of my motivations to begin the marathon was to test the new receiver and i'm pleased to say that it was fabulous. (probably the 2nd best $200 i've ever spent) the previous receiver was also a pioneer elite and it could rattle the windows with ease but the new receiver puts it to shame. what it does, is bring the surround and rear channels to life. the sound is completely different and i am going to enjoy every moment of the DEADWOOD experience.
and on the eighth day, god created DEADWOOD. so take a deep breath, enjoy the moment and prepare to bask in the genius of al swearengen.
this is possibly the best advice advice i've ever heard and consider it to be my guiding light when facing a wee bit of adversity. unfortunately the nogoodnik who uploaded the video disabled embedding so you'll have to
CLICK ON THIS AND BE PREPARED FOR ECSTASY.
if the above video tickles your fancy, you'll want to take the next step in worshiping at the altar of al swearengen.
i love you sons of bitches.

Yins is getting the Senate to proof your word salads? Oh wait, that's sober Second Thought. Never mind
no, i met a man who possessed a trained ape that would jump onto his shoulder and give accurate accounts of the past and present but lacked future vision. i had hoped to employ the ape but the man's confounded puppet show distracted me and the ape fled in panic when i drew my sword.
i continue to suffer the effects of enchantment.
Those cuss words were common in the Old West? I thought "Hell" was pretty hardcore in those days. I could believe it if all those cowboys had been watching Tarentino movies.
i'm pretty sure there was a lot of cursing in the old west and deadwood is pretty much the gold standard of westerns.
it's best to just forget about realism. just sit back and enjoy the ride, you never know how many rides you have left before time expires and you become a fleeting memory.
You surely have a great collection and every one has their own likes and dislikes. We all enjoy what we like although others may not agree with us. It must have been terrible to bear the loss of so many loved ones and you found a wonderful way of overcoming your grief. Instead of becoming depressed an unhappy you had a great presence of mind to find your happiness in something you love.
Best wishes
there is talk of a Deadwood Movie...please Goddess make it so...I miss it like a pulled tooth.
joseph - thank you for the kind words. you're a true gentleman and scholar. the road to inner peace and humility is a long journey that i probably started too late in life but as they say, better late than never. i see far too many people drowning in self pity and transferring their grief and bitterness to friends and family.
life is short, enjoy the moment and try to do a little damage as possible.
js - i have mixed emotions on a deadwood movie. i'm in bliss watching the series and if a movie let me down, the magic of the series might diminishing and i'd hate to fall victim to the law of diminishing returns.
when i could hear, sound mattered to me. going deaf. no so much. i don't think you can do deadwood justice in a movie. that's like saying we're going to make an nypd flick and capture all the character development. no way.
agreed bob - all series seem to go downhill after the first few seasons and in the last season of deadwood they wrapped things up pretty quickly in the last few episodes. after making hearst such a villain, he just left in the last episode. it takes a long time to fully develop and conclude a plot. i would have liked to see al take a few fingers or toes from hearst.
Billy:
I really need to set some time aside and watch (first purchase) the DVDs for Deadwood. My cable system at the time it was shown initially was crap, so I only saw 1 or two episodes ever... at a friend's house. But I could tell it was an excellent show, and I have been meaning to watch the whole thing. I just got to sit down and get a real plan going to do it.
PipeTobacco
pipe - i had the same experience on cable. a friend recommended it and after one episode i gave up but once i had the discs, i was hooked. maybe with the new pvrs cable would be ok. for the life of me, i cannot understand people watching it on a laptop.
Even christians here say cocksucker.
It would have to be at least a six hour movie to be worthy.
As for an international audience keep your words simple, there is no need for complex words if you want many to understand you. Of course "fuck you" and "pussy" seem to be words understood by folks anywhere.
king - excellent suggestion.
al swearengen says fuck you and pussy on a regular basis but he also uses some trickier words and phrases so i'm kind of stuck between the devil and deep blue sea on this one.
six hour movie? maybe a lonesome dove type mini series would do it.
Enjoy the marathon, BP. That cocksucker Al Swearengen is one magnificent bastard.
I like Bullect, if I spelled the name right.
mr shife - yes, swearengen is a magnificent bastard (and a half)
king - bullect?
Bullock, the ex sheriff from Montana.
every year i watch it, i seem to have a different favorite character. farnum was my favorite the first few times, then it was swearengen, then it was jane, then it was dan, then it was johnny, now i'm back to farnum.
i love it when al gathers his crew together; farnum, dan and johnny. it makes me think of tony soprano and his crew.
You recommended the show to me, so I requested it from the library. When whoever had it turned it in, I got an email saying it was ready, but then I didn't get to the library fast enough, and they re-shelved it and charged me a few dollars for wasting their time. I will request it again.
