the election

we lucky canandians are having a federal election in about 2 weeks. here's the sanitized WIKIPEDIA SUMMARY OF THE CANADIAN ELECTION.

and here is my take on it:

current prime minister: steven harper-conservative party. the bad news about steve is he's basically an asshole. the good news about steve is you pretty much know what you're going to get if he wins, an asshole prime minister with a right wing agenda. i don't think he's terribly right wing, in fact i think he's been drifting towards the center over the past few years as he has been tossing goodies at the rubes to try and boost his popularity. there are a lot of canadians who think steve is the devil himself and blame him for all the problems in the world. like i said, he's an asshole but i don't consider him to be satan. one interesting thing about steve is his love of israel. he's always 100% supportive of israel. in fact some people say he's the most popular politician in israel. of course this pisses off our left wing idealists who blame israel for the world's problems.

current leader of the opposition: thomas mulcair - new democrat party. the last election was the first time that the ndp won enough seats in parliament to become the official opposition. for some funny reason the province of quebec threw most of their votes at the ndp. tom mulcair is an interesting dude. he's drifted from the left to the center left in an attempt to get the centrist votes. he also has dual citizenship, canadian and french. for a while he was leading in the polls but now some pollsters are saying he's past his expiry date and this popularity is fading. i can't understand why his dual citizenship isn't more of an issue. i guess the other 2 parties are worried about losing votes in quebec.

current leader of the liberals: JUSTIN TRUDEAU! - he's the son of one our most famous and polarizing prime ministers, pierre elliot trudeau. pierre was to canada what jfk was to the united states, a sexy playboy. young justin has taken the liberals further to the left. in fact, i think the liberals are now a wee bit further to the left than the ndp. it's quite the shocker. of 3 main party leaders, i tend to favor justin. it might be a case of me disliking him the least out of the 3 main candidates for the prime minister's job.

current leader of the green party: elizabeth may - elizabeth is the leader of the greens and actually has a seat in parliament. elizabeth is the first person to be elected as green member of parliament. there was some other guy who defected to the greens after being an independent but he wasn't elected as a green. i like dear old liz but she has a smaller chance of being prime minister than i do of winning an olympic gold medal for men's gymnastics. well, maybe not that small but it's an incredibly small chance.

the interesting thing is how the liberals have drifted to the left and the ndp have drifted to the right. i doubt there's any real philosophical reasons behind their moves, they just think it's the best way to get more votes.

it's a real close race right now with the 3 main parties pretty much tied for popular support but the headlines claim the ndp are slipping and the conservatives might be slightly ahead. of course all this can change tomorrow and it will probably bounce around until the election.

so, how is billy pilgrim going to vote?

ask yourself, how would a sea turtle, an elephant or a whale vote? yes, billy will be voting green. the greens won't get elected but i'm almost 100% certain that i've never voted for the party that won the election. for as long as i can remember i've voted green or communist. in this election we don't have a communist candidate in my riding so i'll be going green. i'm not a communist but i consider voting communist to be the ultimate protest vote. although i always vote some fringe lunatic, i can't remember ever not voting.

i love you sons of bitches.

js - since i was actually born in the country, it should count double.

I definitely wouldn't vote for the Trudeau kid...if I had a vote. He sounds like a pampered posturing pup. Whatever happened to Michael Ingatiev?

gb - trudeau is a bit of a flake but harper is an asshole and mulcair has french citizenship that he won't renounce. so if i was going to vote for one of the big three it would be trudeau but since i'm going green, i won't have to make that decision.

our green party is very positive on promoting and fundraising for safari camps.

Aside from their personal issues, are there any policy differences of note?

Not that there is anything wrong with going green, but it might just be the most important election ever!

a few weeks ago the liberal and ndp were screaming to bring in 50,000 syrians by xmas but harper said no. now the liberal and ndp have figured out that the voters don't want 50,000 syrians by xmas so they dropped the issue.

so far they haven't addressed the problem of protecting sea turtles in the arctic when global warming kicks into high gear.

that's all i can tell you. the other issues don't interest me.

I'll give you fifty cents to vote YES for Preparation H.

I have a FB friend who is convinced Harper is indeed the devil. I don't recall which candidate he thinks is the best. Anyway that's all I know. Actually, that's not true as I feel a lot more informed after reading your blog post. Too bad you don't have a Canadian version of Donald Trump to really spice things up. Happy voting!

If you have an Auto Zone there try one of their batteries, they are made by Johnson Controls. Delco used to be great but I don't know if they still are.

mr shife - i think our election is like most others. which ever candidate can stick to the script, has the best chance of winning. and you want to take money away from the smaller group of voters and toss a few bones to the larger group of voters.

king - it looks like a diehard will be the replacement but monday is thanksgiving so i'll have to wait until tuesday.

“the interesting thing is how the liberals have drifted to the left and the ndp have drifted to the right.”

That’s the case in the US also. It’s especially alarming on the conservative side because the greater the bigotry, intolerance, and pettiness, a candidate expresses, and the more boastful and conceited he is, the more popular he becomes with the members of his party. “Moderate conservative” is becoming a thing of the past.

P.S. “one interesting thing about steve is his love of israel. he's always 100% supportive of israel.”

Is this because he thinks that the end of the world will come sooner if everyone supports Israel, or because he thinks God will love him more for it? Seriously, this is what is behind the conservatives’ support of Israel here. In other words, it has nothing to do with rationality but with what they think God wants.

thims - your psychic! rip escaped a few nights ago and terrorized the neighborhood. first she charged 2 dachshounds which made the old bag who walks them real angry but that was nothing compared to what happened next.

first good old rip ran up to a busy street and brought traffic to a standstill, we were very lucky she didn't get hit by a car. then she spotted a man and his wife walking their pug. rip sprinted to the pug which growled at her. well, that got rip angry and the pug paid the price. she flattened it and bit it in the leg. the woman freaked out and the man started kicking her. i had to apologize profusely and offer to pay any vet bills but the woman wanted blood and was going to report rip. luckily the husband was cool and calmed his wife down. i might or might not be on the hook for some vet bills.

yesterday i installed a new spring on the gate and sliced my finger. god bless rip.

snow - i always ask myself; are the loony right wing politicians just reflecting the views of the voters they are courting or are the loony right wing voters just reflecting all the nonsense that they hear from their politicians. i still don't know the answer but i think the loony politicians would change their tune if it meant more money and more votes.

we're a week away from the election and apparently the liberals are holding onto their slim lead on the conservatives.

Good to hear that the homeschooling is proceeding apace!

Did you see the debate? Hillary was alpha as fuck! O'Malley practically rimmed her on stage, Chafee looked like he blew a gasket, and Webb almost sounded like Kurtz bleating "The horror, the horror."

Sanders did great, and without twisting the knife, managed to stick Hillary, the Democratic Party, and her/their backers with several clean cuts on the core issue of his campaign: income inequality and the injustice of the system. If the populist message spreads, he'll do well (god I hope so). If the corporate media with their prissy mini Cooper have their way then Hillary will get the business.

No way Biden is wading into the tank with her now, unless he wants try out to be the first back-to-back-to-back vice president.

bernie looked good but he also looked pretty old and seemed to have a few senior's moments. hillary looked as phony as a three dollar bill.

Lucky you. We've got thirteen months to go.
