Can the United States go the way of Germany in the past—a great society undone by terrible social turmoil?
if you, like me, are too lazy to read a long article here are few of the highlights:
.....prediction that America would succumb to the fate of ancient Rome, or the hegemonies of 19th-century Britain and 16th-century Spain. Those empires allowed their upper classes to loot the treasury while they clung to power.
In 1970 the richest 1 percent made 9 percent of the nation’s income; now that top slice makes closer to 25 percent. CEOs who once made 50 times the average worker’s salary made more than 500 times as much in 2001.
broke or not, i love you sons of bitches.

Historians who try to predict the future are dickheads. Always believe the opposite of what they say.
I'm so poor I can't pay attention
rich with friends though
Well, I, for one, do believe we're on a one-way ride to oblivion. And we can thank those who destroyed the middle class by allowing the corporatists to eat the country alive.
Sigh.
Dear Ben,
We couldn't keep it.
All the people who worry about government stuff allow corporate stuff to rob and rape the economy, including the poor who can't afford food, let alone be cheated in some robber baron scheme.
gb - but as we say in the money racket, the trend is your friend or don't fight the ticker.
yellowdog - that makes you rich then.
shaw - i agree, the future looks bleak. even if the current financial mess gets sorted out climate change and changing demographics are going to wreak havoc.
charlene - yup, right now there is a surplus of labor so industry doesn't need to overpay.
These are seriously scary times. So many people want to ignore it like it will go away. Its not going anywhere but down.
ananda - as someone who has been pounding the pavement looking for a job, your opinion carries more weight than most.
Things are going as I saw them going and prepared for so I expect for things to remain pretty much the same for me.
My empire is free and clear and I just keep floating along.
Ananda should have gave that more thought before she flew the coop of a secure job, in a neat little town that isn't as bad as she paints it.
I tried to tell her but you can't tell a woman anything anymore, they just won't listen to us, they think we're idiots.
Well at least this idiot isn't in trouble.
The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer !
I'll see you at the soup kitchen !
billy - as long as the fools keep throwing their beers away in the park i have no worries. i haven't counted lately but i've got over $300 since march.
heff - i love bean soup, see ya there.
Beans beans, the musical food, the more you eat the more you toot. The more you toot the better you feel, so why not eat beans for every meal?
I'm starting a crock pot of beans on Thursday, better make a batch of corn bread also.
I must have about 70 pounds of cans saved up here, I'm guessing that they are worth more where you are at, here they are only worth about $17.50.
We seem to be headed toward a Nazi Germany/1984 type scenario as far as freedom goes.
When the U.S. dollar is no longer the world reserve currency a loaf of bread will probably cost a few hundred dollars.
But other than that, everything seems just peachy.
Just leave the gate unlocked at the border, we may want to sneak through.
