occupy vancouver

yesterday a woman died at the OCCUPY VANCOUVER TENT CITY. previously there was a small debate as to whether or not the city should deal with the tent city. predictably the mayor waffled on the whole issue passing it along to the fire department, police department and the health board. the health board was sent to check out health issues and found a mess complete with rats having a jolly old time co-habitating with the tenters. the fire department then took a look and talked the tenters into creating fire lanes in the tent city. the whole thing was very civilized. in fact i would say that the city coddled the tenters.

now the mayor had decreed that THE TENT CITY BE SHUT DOWN.

throughout the whole farce i have heard nothing about wall street or robber barons. instead we heard that the tenters were having meetings to figure out what they were doing and elect leaders. i would have thought these things should have been decided before setting up the tent city. the one protest i heard about was OCCUPY THE VATICAN PROTEST PARADE. i can't remember much coming about regarding the occupy the vatican movement but i would rather see the vatican brought down than the business world.

so what has happened as a result of the occupy vancouver movement?

1. a young woman died, probably a drug overdose. there has been no official cause of death disclosed yet.

2. the art gallery lawns have been turned into a shit hole.

3. the left wing mayor of vancouver will probably lose the upcoming mayoral election due to his molly coddling of the tenters.

i have referred the occupiers as tenters rather than protesters because i think a bunch of professional malcontents jumped on the occupy bandwagon with no real goal or agenda.

rented a tent, a tent, a tent. rented a tent, a tent, a tent. rented a tent a tent....

a young woman died needlessly.

i think this song is quite relevant.

i love you sons of bitches.

A good song for this. There is a tent city in Eugene, where thankfully I do not live but live close enough to enjoy. Same story... they molly coddled them and gave them a beautiful park to set up camp. They didn't like the park because they had to walk too far to go protest. Now they are demanding to live at the U of O. The college hasn't agreed to it yet. The students interviewed do not want them there as a distraction.
I don't understand how they can afford to camp like that. What about their jobs, their children, their bills? The city even provided heaters to keep the children warm. What about the school the kids are missing? Some people give them food and things. Restaurants also give them food.
I think its in self defense on the part of the restaurants. Keep them from occupying their front doors.

I'm all for the right to protest, but this is kind of nutty. I think it will peter out as the mess mounts and cities have to do something. But I will say this... the politicians do not know how to deal with it.

silly - i don't know about the u.s. but it will soon peter out up here. vancouver has spent over $500,000 on police overtime alone for this little exercise and that doesn't include health, fire and cleaning up the art gallery after they leave.

they lost my sympathy when they chose the art gallery to pitch their tents.

rented a tent a tent, rented a tent a tent, rented a tent a tent.........

I would uproot the tents and give these people the right to moon at whomever they want to. That's a much better targeted protest than despoiling a public amenity.

Sad all the way around.

I can't say that I approve of tent cities, get right down to it, it's just pretty well off folks putting on a show and party and turning public places into shit holes that the tax payers have to clean up.

Peaceful protests, pfff. I would approve if they were waging all out war and packing guns capable of actual change instead of just making shit holes and a media circus.

And they pick the wrong fucking locations, go camp on the lawns of rich fucks, and on the grounds of the corporate banking headquarters, forget the fucking branch banks, they're just working folks trying to make a living.

These fucking monkeys do everything wrong.

gb - you have my vote for mayor!

bob - indeed it is. a prosperous city like vancouver with a huge asian population that is well off isn't a good place for the occupy movement.

bill - agreed. they should set up shop on the lawns of the corporations they oppose. boycotting banks might be a good idea but i like banks better than credit unions.

I like the cleavage in my bank, that's why I go in there often. :-)

As a side note.... In my 68 years I've seen a hell of a lot of countries go bust with next to no effect on my life, so I'm not going to sit around and worry about a pissy little country like Greece.

BBC said...

I have an email buddy in Greece and she's doing fine so it's not all bad for everyone, life will still go on there.

I have more important things to fuss about, like this fingernail growing out so I can pick my nose. :-)

and they thought the hippies weren't organized..???

It seems to me without a unified goal, the protesters are just pissing in the wind, literally in some cases.

BBC said...

Pretty hard to get unified when everyone thinks differently.

I'd just like some sunshine.

BBC said...

Shouldn't they draw up a manifest or constitution and elect some wise (hahaha) leadership? Things like that.

BBC said...

I wonder if we would help bail Canada out, hahahaha

Well, maybe, if they agreed to switch to our money and banking system.

But then, who would bail us out? Interesting shit to ponder on.

billy pilgrim said...

bill - the great white north doesn't need bailing out. our banking system is hailed as the best in the g20.

tex - most of your protesters have their own agenda, and for many that means getting loaded and laid.

yellowdog - i'd like to think that hippies would have been smart enough to start this whole deal in the spring.

BBC said...

True, your banking system is more honest than ours it seems. Most likely because your government has kept it that way.

Oh, so sad. First I've heard of this. A shame they haven't gotten it together. A cohesive message and people who really know how to organize and lead would help. I think it's a humble cause but they've gone astray...

Winter's going to shut down most of them, anyway.

"i think a bunch of professional malcontents jumped on the occupy bandwagon with no real goal or agenda."

It remains to be seen if the original #Occupy Wall Street gathering gets its message across. Certainly, in America, there's been what I think is a very desirable leftward tilt to the conversation since its inception. It's awakened the call for justice for the wheelers and dealers who bundled mortgages, sold the bundles to the middle class in unfathomable forms, and then bet against the mortgage holders, thereby bringing the American economy to its knees. Yes, there are other necessary variables in the equation, but there is clear culpability on Wall St., nevertheless.

I am glad for Canada's strong position; I wouldn't wish our fate on anyone. Perhaps Occupy Vancouver had no message, but #Occupy Wall Street's problem is not lack of message. The problem is that there are too many issues that need to be sorted and framed sensibly. And real progress is being made on that score.

We may not get any sun today but other than that the weather is mild, I'm thankful for that.

jayne - the woman's step-father has been on tv saying she had little interest in social injustice but just dropped in a few days earlier to hang out and have a little fun. he was 100% sure that she'd be alive today if not for the occupy vancouver crowd.

nance - i think the occupy vancouver crowd and groups like them are doing more harm than good to the occupy wall street cause. i feel sympathetic to the occupy vancouver crowd until i see them on the news acting like fools.

bill - it's a soggy dull day here. i just love cleaning ruby's feet and drying her every few hours.

So I put my shoes on and walked over to see what was happening in your part of the universe! My barefoot days are behind me (sigh). It pains me to watch a perfectly good concept go to hell in a handbasket because no one thought to organize it first. Everything needs organization... just ask any woman and she'll tell you. So, now that I'm here, can I take my shoes off? And are you serving refreshments?

billy pilgrim said...

make yourself at home mildred.

it's nice little pond. it's clean. it's neat.
the water is warm. there's plenty to eat.

and i just made a pot of chocolate fudge coffee.

Everything needs organization... just ask any woman and she'll tell you.

But please don't ask any women to organize fixing this planet.

Oh hell, go ahead, then we will know who to blame when things go to hell. Us guys have taken it in the shorts long enough.

It's going to be a fine day, yes? If it's not raining I'll take the boat out of the shelter to work on it some, and I'm taking Helen to a doctors appointment, other than that I don't have much planned for the day.

You smell a rat?

Billy - "tex - most of your protesters have their own agenda, and for many that means getting loaded and laid."

I can't criticize the protesters, turns out many of them have the agenda that I have.

billy pilgrim said...

bill - yeah, it's shitty weather here. i got ready to cycle up to the stores and it started raining so i went back into the house. i'll ride in warm summer rain but not this cold stuff.

tex - a fine agenda. it would have my full support if it didn't involve turning the art gallery lawns into a shit hole. might be time for a little fishing.

BBC said...

It was decent enough here, no rain today, surprised you got some, you're not that far away from me.

Maybe you got the edge of that Alaska storm.

Good choice of music, BP, and a good blog. Take care.

I smell a rat, I think it's a female.

I should be able to get a coat of paint on the new boat top today, it will be a good day.

billy pilgrim said...

bill - overcast here but the sun should make an appearance this afternoon.

mr shife - ruby thanks you for your support. you're a saint.

Alaska sure got hit with a dandy storm. I'd never live right on a coastline, I'm about two miles from the shoreline and at about 800 feet elevation and nasty storms here mostly jump over me.

Rain expected today but I'll put a heater in the shelter so I can put another coat of paint on the boat top.

A RAT?

I tought I smelled a puddy tat!

And a killing at the Occupy Oakland site now eh?

Billy C will love that!

Go killers!
