the tomaters are in the ground! the rule of thumb around here is not to plant tomatoes outside until after the may long weekend. last year it was mid june before i could plant them outside due to the shitty cold wet weather. i was planning on waiting until late may but i noticed my neighbor had planted his and last year he had a beautiful crop of tomatoes by mid august. my tomatoes didn't start ripening until early september and depending on the weather, blight could set as early as the 1st of september. hopefully getting an early start will eliminate the threat of blight setting in. it's hard to concentrate at the cracker factory with tomatoes on the mind.
this little bugger has been in the ground for 10 days covered with a clear plastic garbage bag.
as you can see i've assigned one of my favorite ivy plants the task of guarding the wee tomato plants.
and here's the incubator. kinda like the resurrection ship on battlestar galactica.
I planted my a couple of weeks ago..need to take some pictures..I have one of those topsy turvy ones and then 4 in a pot, that need to be transplanted..I keep forgetting..sigh*
My tomatoes burned up last year, so this year I planted them where they'll get some shade. I also planted some squash, peppers and cucumbers, I'll add okra later.
Also, I thought I had heard every John Denver song, I was wrong.
yellowdog - and you have the hot texas sun. yours will be ripe before mine blossom.
gb - yup, they are better than most tomatoes from the store but the store is a more dependable source.
bbc - you prepare your posts one day in advance! aren't you the eager beaver.
aquarians - the tortoise and the gnome had a bucket over their head for the winter. that thing is solid concrete and weighs over 100 pounds. (and it wasn't cheap)
tex - wouldn't be nice if we could grow something a little more medicinal.
Funny... right before sitting down to read this, I finished planting a lovely cheery tomato in a Topsy Turvey thing. Ha! I have roma seedlings that have not reached garden stage yet. Those are some fine looking plants. Very healthy.
My plant instructions told me to bury 80% of the plant. I have never done this before. Should be interesting.
I have always like John Denver. Grandma's Feather Bed was a good one too. And I have to agree about home grown tomatoes... nothing better.
It can't be that time of year already? Really? Dang. I'm doing the upside downs again. They were the only ones to survive. And they look silly, too. ;)
I grow my tomatoes in pots so I can swap out the soil every couple of years. Around here, Easter is seen as the safe date, but we did get a light frost one morning after that. I draped my plants in sheets that night, and they were fine.

They look good, but what about the taste? Better than you can get from a fruit and vegetable market?
Interesting.... I wrote my tomato post yesterday and will post it tomorrow.
What happened to the Garden Gnome astride the tortoise?
Replaced by those horrid pink carotenoid carrying cunts?
And why was the gnome wearing a bucket on his head? Out of shame?
May your tomatoes bring you much joy.

I have posts I wrote five years ago that I haven't had time to post yet.
I've never felt the need to piss away money on an expensive tortoise and gnome and have to put a bucket over their head for the winter.
That would just be fucking anal.
Admit it, you don't give a fuck about the future, you just give a fuck about the now.
silly - topsy turvey? is that one of those hanging things where the tomato grows upside down?
bill - i've never felt the need to hide from leslie.
pilgrim -
Always to remember to DELIVER the aforesaid cock punch.
So,I heard something aboot cunt?
Anal too?
This joint is jumpin'!
And by jumpin' I mean my Hugh Joint is throbbin for some noggin.
ALTC, Those G Gnomes(respect) are
seriously sexual compulsives.
The bucket represents the more traditional ...raincoat I believe.
Music Maestro....
Hope they grow well. And the pink flamingoes?

The weather report for the next week is looking pretty good, you can get some yard work done.
I'm going to beat back some grass myself, and then maybe put some killer on it.
charlie - can't have a party without pink flamingos.
jayne - i love those upside down tomatoes. one day i hope to have some.
bill - yup, 20 degrees c and sunny. the plastic will off this weekend.
I may buy one of those hanging upside tomato plants so I don't have to dig a fucking hole and deal with slugs.
I'm pretty sure I can kill that fucker without the help of fucking slugs.

I hope those magnificent red bastards grow well for you, BP. Best of luck.
I just bought a pot with two tomato plants in it, I can now proceed to kill those suckers.
Happy Mother's Day!
secret - i glad that i'm not competing with you in this little endeavor.
mr shife - they might not be red. last year i grew lemon tomatoes and they were a lovely shade of yellow/orange.
bill - you've already conceded defeat so now that the pressures off you can probably perform. i had heard that you couldn't perform under pressure.
I never compete with fellow gardeners - I'm just glad for the company!
